Our second blog

Basically, this is a little piece about what we're discussing today.

ABOUT

Welcome to Angel House Clearance Company and Removals

“We’re a House Clearance Company with a Conscience.

“Empathy, Community Support and Environmental Awareness are paramount to us”

We are based in Newcastle Upon Tyne and have been in operation now for 7 years. The first few years were about growing The Angelical Den, our ‘jewels and gems’ second hand shop of preloved goods, a thriving hubbub based in the heart of Elswick.

We’ve recently taken the leap to start our own House Clearance Company. We’ve been doing it successfully for a few years, collaborating with other house clearance and waste removal companies. We can’t emphasise how ready we are to expand beyond our shop, especially after the disconnection of Covid.

We continually endeavour to deliver a sensitive, thoughtful and respectful person and family centred approach towards each and every job we undertake.

Every house, every client, every assignment, your needs, requests and circumstances matter to us and will be happily met.

Having undertaken quite a few clearances, we’re well aware of the difficulties encountered when our clients are left with the sensitive and emotional task of having to organise and make difficult decisions over the contents of their loved one’s homes.

At Angel House Clearance, not only do we approach each job safely and efficiently, ensuring it to be as stress free for you as possible, we also approach each and every home individually with empathy and dignity.

SERVICES

People Who Hoard

Once a person who hoards ‘collecting life’ comes to an end an extreme number of belongings, including collections of particular items are chaotically left behind.  Hoarders houses present challenging circumstances.  With the correct guidance, client led, when possible, we can professionally deal with most matters that arise.

We are more than familiar with walking into challenging circumstances, for e.g., often doors can’t open due to the amount of clutter to allow for a full inspection.

There are stages or hoards that can help us identify what level the Angel team will be dealing with.  Complex hoarding clearances will take twice as long as a ‘normal’ clearance.

We’ve successfully helped families through the complexities of clearing a hoarder’s home.  With the families go- ahead, the Angel Teams objective is to eliminate a lot of the stress through patience, understanding and a lot of hard work.

Knowledge is power for us on a hoarder’s house clearance, the better prepared we are the smoother and quicker the job will run.  Don’t be afraid to be completely honest with us, we understand.

There have been several occasions where the family didn’t know certain items were still in situ at the home, some items/belongings simply aren’t visible due to the vast amount of clutter.  When this occurs, we put items to onside, especially items we believe could hold sentimental value.

Angel House Clearance endeavour to respectfully support you all during such a delicate and trusted situation.

Clearing hoarders’ homes are the most sensitive and most difficult of all clearances. From a salvage point of view, we do extremely well to prevent all items literally going straight to landfill.  We aim to always help save the world one item at a time.

Divorce – Partner Separation

When a relationship breaks down and the marital home is no longer what it once was, naturally, a house clearance can become complicated, especially when it comes to the fair distribution of the family home contents and assets.  Who takes what?

In a generic undisputed house clearance, the keys are handed over and the house gets cleared, unless both parties have been specific about what items they have agreed to keep or put in storage.

In these circumstances, it’s extremely helpful and beneficial for parties to create a household inventory list to keep track of everything, understand what belongs to who, what needs removed and where it is being delivered to (see our removals section)? Our Angel probate service can help ascertain the monetary value of items if this is a service you require.  This can be beneficial for some parties who want to offset household items towards the cost of a clearance.

Often one of the ‘parties’ will still be living in the family home and will refuse to communicate with their ex-partner.  If this happens to be your current circumstances, we offer support to be the ‘go between’ for both parties.   Coherent communication between all parties is essential. We all have to agree to a list, a contract of such of items kept, left, cleared, stored and delivered.

Language and Communication Barriers

Angel House Clearance works closely within the local community.  We use professional translators to assist with complex procedures regarding the clearance or removal of household items, especially if there any uncertainties around what items are to be cleared/ kept and English is not your first language.

This service will need to be paid for prior to the clearance commencing.

If you have a hearing impairment all we ask for is your grace. We will endeavour to communicate effectively offering visual imagery prompts and checklists.

LANDLORD/LADY PACKAGE

If tenants vacate a property before the contractual agreement ends and are in

breach of not complying with the landlord/tenant(s) contract, for e.g., broken cabinets, rips and tears to interiors, appliances stolen or missing.  We can supply you with video and photographic evidence before the clearance commences.  This can further be used as evidence if a court hearing is pursued.  Here at Angel, we don’t judge personal circumstances.  Our aim is to save the planet by clearing any property, making sure nothing goes to landfill, that everything gets rehomed, restored or recycled, saving the planet one item at a time.

Unkept Garden/landscaping

The Angel team offer a gardening service to clear an overgrown space.  We also offer a bespoke landscaping service carried out by Otto and his wife Jane.  Their ethos is to bring the newly cleared house into harmony with the changes, just as the seasons change so does the next chapter of home.

Custodial Sentencing …what happens to your possessions and pets?

Working out what to do with your possessions and pets when you go to prison can be very difficult and emotional, especially when you don’t have family to help oversee a clearance or they live too far away.

Check with your insurance policy agreement.  Most insurance companies don’t cover contents insurance if you no longer live in the property.

If an immediate clearance is needed after a custodial sentence decision, we can help.  Teaming up with local trade services and professionals, we have the best solution for long term storage or immediate removal of all items.

In circumstances where items haven’t been seized by authorities or given to family or close friends, the Angel Team can assist in the safe disposal and/or distribution of unwanted goods.

We work closely with an animal charity to help house pets that are left in a property.  Two members of staff from our Angel team have rescue dogs, recently Antonia adopted Cole after the previous owner went to Prison.

Family Affairs and Probate

When a loved one passes away and there are several beneficiaries in the Will and assets must be distributed correctly, usually, a specified named person in the Will or in some cases Next of Kin oversee the legal affairs and often obtain ‘probate’.

At Angel House Clearance we offer an in –house probate service. Household items go through the probate process as they are seen as probate assets/debts.   Most household probate assets have little monetary value and have more sentimental value.  Our Angel Probate valuer has been in the ‘second hand goods and antique trade’ for over 30+ years and can assist you through the value of household items.  The monetary value of the household items can be off-set against the overall house clearance costs.

Long Distance Clearances /virtual Package

If you live a long distance away from the property that has to be cleared, or you live in another country, our Virtual Distance package allows us to contact you overseas for a virtual house tour.  Zoom or WhatsApp we find work well.  We walk you through every room, attic, shed space, even cupboards under the stairs throughout the house making a household inventory of what you want put into storage, cleared or sent abroad.  It’s actually a very straight forward stress-free process.

We work closely with Inter Global Forwarding who specialise in cargo and freight management offering reliable solutions to logistical problems.

We find the Virtual Distance Package allows our clients to feel present and included every step of the clearance and were saving on our carbon footprint.

Our Ethics

We are acutely aware now more than ever that it’s crucial to realise that every choice we make is extremely important to the health of our planet.

We have a company policy of abiding by our 4 R rules.

Recycle, Restore, Re-sell, Repeat

Following the four Rs provides environmentally-friendly ways to reduce the negative impact of the increasing amount of waste on the natural environment.

Recycle

We try to recycle almost everything. As the saying goes, ‘one man’s junk is another man’s treasure’ (not forgetting the women too!)  We work closely supporting to help sustain and grow small local businesses, most of which are owned by women.

We try to give everything a home which is made possible by having a second-hand shop where household items are sold at very reasonable prices for families and individuals on low incomes.

Having a strong local client base (and not to forget our team) we are able to recycle and restore furniture, clothes and books whom all have specific hobbies, collectively they make use of just about everything including off cuts of wood, steel, postcards for collaging etc.

Restore/Re-sell /Repeat

Older vintage/retro furniture is sold at affordable prices to support and sustain local independent small businesses, (80%women) where items are lovingly

upcycled, repurposed and repaired into a product of a higher quality which is then sold giving it a new home and new lease of life

Repairing and reusing items is another way to reduce the consumption of materials and natural resources.

Magazines, books, paints, wool, materials including craft materials are distributed to local independent artists and are own volunteers to help kick start their hobbies and support local art projects.

Bedding is given to our local cat and dog shelter.   In date foods go to the local food bank and our volunteers.

Any out-of-date bio gradable food goes into a compost bin at the allotment, our way to help minimise methane emissions and

fertilise the earth to grow vegetables and wild flowers.

A continuous recycling process that is forever respected.

FAQ

What is a house clearance?

A house clearance takes place more often than not when a family member or friend has passed away and you’re left with their house to be cleared and sold.

Do you only clear houses?

No, we also clear country houses, stately homes, flats, basements, bungalows, cottages, barns, garages, university dorms and businesses

What happens to items taken from a clearance?

Angel H C has a ‘junk and gems’ shop called the Angelic Den in the heart of the community in Newcastle’s West End. Literally everything is sold and distributed from the shop at bottom line prices making, it affordable to families on a low income.

The shop is more than just a junk shop, it’s a friendly community hubbub where regulars come for company, advice and support.  A lot of what we clear from your house clearance goes into our community shop, the rest goes to local independent businesses to help maintain and sustained their businesses. We try to recycle 90% of everything from a clearance, (see our Ethics page)

Covid19 and how will it affect a clearance?

During lockdown and the foreseeable future, we are acclimatising to working from home and adjusting to new virtual ways of working and communicating. In a technological age, many businesses can function effectively online, we managed to do so my using zoom and WhatsApp video calls where clients gave us virtual tours of their homes.

Our team are astutely aware of safe practices under Covid/government rules, regulations and guidelines when entering into a property.

How do you operate?

Once you have made contact, we sensitively talk through the type of property you want cleared and the number of contents you want taking away from the property.

It might be that you want a garage cleared or a full house emptied.  We have the team, vehicles and insurances to manage all of your requirements.

Once we are all clear of the job in hand and have a written itinerary or video diary in place re items to be cleared, we then proceed with the clearance.

Do you charge to clear my house?

If we are carrying out a full house clearance and the items are all sellable, this will offset most of the costs that are incurred.

The more we have to sell and restore the less we charge.

Please don’t hesitate to call us for a quote, we are transparent with no hidden costs.  Every home is priced invidually as no two homes and circumstances are ever the same.

If we don’t have any items to sell/rehome,

we would charge by the van size, time taken, man/women power and petrol.

Do I have to be at the property when you clear?

No, you don’t have to be there when we’re carrying out the clearance.  Keys can be sent to our business HQ or left with a designated person.

FORM

You have most likely just spoken to Gabriel or made contact through the website or Facebook page.

WELCOME

From our experience, these questions are beneficial for us all to work effectively and in union together.

What is the size of the house you want cleared?  For e.g., is it 1/2/3/4 bedrooms, is there also a barn, garage, shed or attic attached or on the property that also need clearing?

What timescale are we working with?  Do you already have a sale completion date?

How accessible is the property, can a Luton van park on the drive or front street, are there any bridges leading to your property that a large van couldn’t access?

What amount of the contents need to be cleared.

We understand this can be hard to gauge and visualise, especially in a house owned by an individual(s) that hoard.  If you see our van sizes this will help.

We would ask you to list or send a video diary of the house/property and contents.

If you live in a 30mile radius of Newcastle we will visit the property, however, we do try to save on carbon footprint and save

our environment as much as humanly possible, this is where a virtual tour is useful.

Adapting to new ways of communication be it a WhatsApp video call or zoom call where you talk us through room by room has proved to help enormously (I think we all managed at least one video call during lockdown)

It’s also very helpful to talk us through the large items of furniture and the condition/quality of contents so we can be clear on what we can re-sell, restore and recycle within our local community.  Knowing what

items we can re-sell will be taken into consideration when pricing up the clearance.

Do you have any sentimental items that you want left in the property? please be specific.

Do you require any additional services?

See our services section

Who has the keys for the property? A family member/solicitor/ family friend or neighbour?

Keys can be sent special delivery to the contact address on the contact page. The appointed person will have to be there to let us in at the time you have specified.  We are always punctual and rely on you to be punctual too.

Are you aware of asbestos/toxic waste and or rubble, oils, paints etc.

Is there electricity at the property?

Is there any structural or interior damage we have to be aware of, for e.g., water damage, rotten floor boards or roof damage?

My team of volunteers and hardworking friends.  They are all so special

THE ANGEL TEAM

Gabriel, the boss, the head Angel, the brains and brawn of the business, Angelical Den owner, father and animal saver.

You will be safe in his hands…. he has the biggest hands in the business.

Gabriel has the strongest of worth Ethics.  He gets up 4am in the morning, takes zooky (his rescue dog found on a house clearance) out on his electric skateboard for 7 miles, combining good exercise with back lane skratting.  No joke, he once carried a boiler back whilst skateboarding and managing zooky.

He strongly believes in recycling, he rehomes everything via his shop, staff/volunteers and client base whilst also donating to local charities including the food bank and cat and dog shelter.

He’s working hard every day to save every item one day at a time whilst endeavouring to save the environment, not just household items, animals too! See his dog rescue story in the blog section.  He nurtures his staff and volunteers, supporting them all to be healthy, happy and feel cared for.

He’s patient at transferring his business and practical skills to team Angel

He’s very energetic, fun loving and charming.  He somehow manages to make every clearance feel safe and secure, you do literally feel like everything is safe in those huge caring hands.

Angel Gabriel is your first and best point of call for talking through your pending clearance or removal.

Antonia is the best photographer that I know. She can make the ugliest of items look amazing. Her interior design skills are second to none. With a very keen eye she does what she does best at her own business headquarters. Antonia specialises in the restoration of retro, vintage and antique goods. She owns Dearest Retro.

Antonia has a great recycling ethos, hinges, handles, table legs etc she salvages from certain items that are too damaged to restore. She even makes her own bees wax using any leftover oils at house clearances. She can spot old and interesting furniture

a mile off.  Here style is very defined and unique.

Retro furniture is found in most houses that we clear.  Together Antonia and I have managed to recycle hundreds of retro items from the landfill. Not only do I feel we have salvaged a tiny piece of history but we also like to believe that the items will live on in yet another house.   Dearest Retro has been climbing in success since 2019. Handles she loves. Wood worm don’t scare her at all.

Coal is the Dearest Retro studio dog and he likes to ride in the Luton van.   He sometimes cameos on the Dearest Retro Instagram page.

Simon

We call him question. Any answer he doesn’t know he will find out in front of our very eyes. He is amazing. He can turn a 5-pound product into a 25 pound one just by taking his time testing, tinkering and putting it through various sources on the internet. Simon is so honest. H had several repeat customers come to The Angelical Den requesting his services, He’s so funny too. I hope if you read this blog you come to the store just to ask him a question. Armed with brutal honesty he goes about doing what he does best on a daily basis for us. Si loves electronics.

Simon takes the time to fully test items, package and distribute allowing the company to reach a greater target audience whilst gaining better coin for the deal. He has fun when he is at The Angelical Den. He feels at home in the mess of wires and the random products constantly appearing at the store. His face

is the best when he finds something worth good money and I’m selling it for a fiver. He loves Xboxes, PlayStation, Apple, Samsung.  Anything you need the instructions to, si has a magnetic pull to, he loves an electrical challenge.  Si is also strangely good with gold and silver items. He can tell you if something is gold just by the look of it.  He has just been made a dad for the fourth time, Ella (his third youngest) likes to come to the shop on her school holidays, she loves a huge cuddly toy.

Curtis

What can we say about Curtis? He is our shop Supervisor and assistant manager on some days. He has come far. He no longer goes to get the glass hammer for you anymore. He has come such a long way. Curtis is now the speed of the shop. He always gets it right on the second time. He

has a heart of gold that’s why he is in the highest position in the store when I’m not there? He is always happy to help, He is a fun young man and I believe one day he will make the very best of managers. Till then, we will all have to wait patiently until he confidently learns the ropes enough to take over the store. Mastering in mechanics he knows how to salvage motor vehicles and parts. This enables us to keep recycling rates high.

Darren.

He is a firm believer in the methodical approach. He is learning to gather pace! but he gets the job done in the end. He’s with us for work experience one day a week and he love the vibe of the Angelical Den. He volunteers for us as he agrees that there is far too much waste in the world and even if we can save one item it counts. We help Paul out and make sure that he gets a lot of the wood that we are asked to take. Paul will then help a family member or a friend to get a job done using the complementary wood from the clearances. This keeps our recycling rate up very high.

John

Brilliant with metal work and going through university at the moment. John is a true hippy at heart. He would clear the whole house bare foot if it wasn’t for our staff health and safety policy! John loves life to its fullest and has the highest empathy for each of its moments. John makes swords when he can and we consider him to be our Geordie Viking. He has been there since the start and I’m sure he will be there to the end.
